Obsidian Butte – Brawley Seismic Zone

In the 70’s this area was very active seismically, and the last three days have seen renewed activity. Situated between two faults, the San Andreas and the Imperial, The Desert Sun reports there have been over 300 quakes. This appears to be an extension of the same force that separated Baja from the Mexican mainland.

The swarm of quakes has struck in an area called the Brawley seismic zone. The zone runs north to south and is connected on its northern end to the San Andreas Fault and its southern end with the Imperial Fault. The area marks the boundary between the North American and Pacific geologic plates, which are slowly pulling apart, said Pat Abbott, a geologist at San Diego State University. The same process created the Gulf of California over 5.5 million years.
