Tales From The Yellow Bus

I had the pleasure of driving the members of the Association of American Mothers from Embassy Suites where they were staying to The Rhododendron Gardens to Portland State University and back to their hotel. They are having their national convention this week in Portland. Next year the convention will be held in NY City. I met women from Alaska, and Rhode Island and North Dakota and many more states. I even met one mother from Nigeria.

The group is dedicated:

…to to preserving the moral and spiritual foundations of the family in America. At a time when the return of family values has become a national priority, American Mothers, Inc. responds with educational, cultural, and spiritual programs for mothers of all ages.

AMI is an interfaith, non-political, and non-profit organization for women and men who support our purpose of strengthening the moral and spiritual foundations of the family and the home. AMI is dedicated to continuing its 68-year pledge to promote these age-old values and principles upon which America was founded. The fracturing of family life can be resisted and altered. AMI stands ready to help the nation rededicate itself to its family commitments.

What a fun group of women who pointed out that the group was started to extol the virtues of motherhood and feel those values are even more important today.

One gal from North Dakota told me this Ole and Lena story:

One night, a torrential rain soaked northwestern Minnesota. The next morning the resulting floodwaters came up about 6 feet into most of the homes there.

Mrs. Johnson was sitting on her roof with her neighbor, Lena, waiting for help to come. Mrs. Johnson noticed a baseball cap, floating near the house.

Then she saw it float far out into the front yard, then float back to the house; it kept floating away from the house, then back towards the house.

Her curiosity got the best of her, so she asked Lena, “Do you see dat der baseball cap a floatin’ away from da house, den back again?”

Lena said, “Oh yeah, dats my husband Ole; I tole dat lazy-such and such he vasgonna cut da grass today, come hell or high water!!!!

She was good. She even had the accent down.

But, I’ll tell you, with over 40 women on the bus, all talking away, it was louder than any group of 6th graders singing camp songs.

Blazers Win The Second Home Game

What a gutty performance by our boys tonight. There were all kinds of runs by both teams, but the Blazers always had an answer. Quite a change from the first home game against the Rockets. I feel bad for Motumbo who hurt his knee and will require surgery. He says he’s finished playing basketball.

So we are one and one and now we need to win one on their home court. We were 50/50 on the road this season, so it’s possible we could come back here tied 2-2.

Go Blazers!

Two Quakes In Maupin

Richland, Wash. has has a swarm of quakes. Is it now Maupin’s turn? These two just took place today:

Blu-ray Prices Expected To Fall

Here’s good news: the price of a Blu-ray player is expected to fall to $99. I just checked eBay and Amazon.com and prices currently range from $199 to $399.

In this case I was not an early adopter, but I will consider buying one this year.

Still Volcano Boarding

About two years ago Ib posted this article Down Cerro Negra at 25 Miles Per Hour.

It’s nice to know, according to the NY Times today, that thrill seekers are still Volcano Boarding, only this time at 50 miles an hour!

Improved equipment?

Rockets drop Trail Blazers 108-81 in Game 1

That wasn’t fun.  We were out to dinner and missed the first half.  Don’t think I could have stomached the whole game.  Now we’ll see what our boys are made of.  They won 50% of their road games.  They are capable of winning one there.  Go Blazers!!!

Velocity Increasing?

I missed this but Richard Maybury writing the Early Warning Report has issued an update to subscribers warning of an increase in velocity for the US Dollar which signals the deflation hit bottom in February; inflation to follow. Velocity increases when people hold dollars for shorter and shorter time periods. maybury gives five reasons for increased velocity:

  1. China, calling for a replacement of the dollar as the world’s reserve currency is the most powerful attack on the dollar yet.
  2. There’s an increased fear of the dollar.
  3. At the Independent Community Bankers meeting, a Bernanke squeeze doll was handed out, and Bernanke was the target of ridicule.
  4. The Fed announced it will purchase mountains of long-term government bonds, and mortgages.
  5. Orders for big-ticket durable goods, new homes and existing homes have risen recently.

Maybury is 85% certain he’s right.  That means rising inflation and a falling dollar and higher prices for precious metals and oil.
