Portland Home Prices Make New Lows

Zero Hedge reports on the Case-Shiller home price data for January,2012 and finds “…that in the first month of the year, prices across the top 20 MSAs dropped once again, posting a 9th consecutive decline…”

“Despite some positive economic signs, home prices continued to drop. The 10- and 20- City Composites and eight cities – Atlanta, Chicago, Cleveland, Las Vegas, New York, Portland, Seattle and Tampa – made new lows,” says David M. Blitzer, Chairman of the Index Committee at S&P Indices.

Hollywood Is So Funny!

First, we had liberal Meryl Streep play conservative Margaret Thatcher in “Iron Lady,” now check this out:

In the midst of recruiting an all-star ensemble for his long-gestating passion project “The Butler,” director Lee Daniels has tapped Jane Fonda to play Nancy Reagan.

Based on a Washington Post report by Wil Haygood, pic follows Eugene Allen, the White House butler whose career started with Harry Truman in 1952 and ended in 1986 with Ronald Reagan.

Better Red than Dead Jane Fonda playing Ronnie’s wife. LMAO!
Give me a break!

“You Can’t Handle The Truth!”

Interviewed today by King World News, Sprott Asset Management’s John Embry points to recent comments by U.S. Treasury Secretary Tim Geithner indicating that virtually infinite new government debt will be necessary to keep the government and the economy going. This, Embry says, will be highly inflationary, against which gold, silver, and their mining shares will provide protection even as they are all very cheap at the moment. An excerpt from the interview is posted at the King World News blog here:

Look At The Gold/Oil and Silver/Oil Cross

Egon von Greyerz, founder and Managing Partner of Matterhorn Asset Management AG & GoldSwitzerland is interviewed on King World. Something he said made me look at the Gold/WTIC cross. It appears that Gold is close to a turn against Oil looking at today’s action. The chart of the cross shows Gold appearing to bottom at 15.5 to Oil down from 22+ (See Chart). I’ve posted several times that Oil looks like it could jump to $119. What could that mean for Gold at 22+? 22 X $119 is $2,618 That’s a $900 jump. I think we are on the verge of a big move in Gold.

How about Silver? Silver is in somewhat the same position, not quite as far along as Gold as I see it, but a move to $119 in Oil, could give us $61 Silver (See Chart).

UPDATE: The Three Rivers quake is on the south shore line of Pauline Lake.

Paulina Lake is one of the twin crater lakes (the other being East Lake), located 6,350 feet (1,940 m) above sea level in Newberry Crater within the caldera of Newberry Volcano, about 25 miles south of Bend, Oregon.

Define Plutocrat

Zero Hedge is a must read for me many times a day.  Today “Welcome To The United States of Orwell, Part 1: Our One Last Chance to Preserve the Bill of Rights” caught my eye, especially this paragraph:

“Everything that Richard Nixon did to me, for which he faced impeachment and prosecution, which led to his resignation, is now legal under the Patriot Act, the Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Act, and the National Defense Authorization Act (NDAA).” Daniel Ellsberg. Can Congress legalize tyranny by passing a law that says it can? Can Congress shred the Bill of Rights by passing a law that says it can? Well, Congress has passed such a law, and President Obama–the most effective Trojan Horse president in American history, a plutocrat dressed as a “progressive”– rushed to sign it on New Years Eve 2011 when nobody was looking.

I had forgotten the definition of “Plutocrat” so I looked it up.

plu·toc·ra·cy (pl-tkr-s)
n. pl. plu·toc·ra·cies
1. Government by the wealthy.
2. A wealthy class that controls a government.
3. A government or state in which the wealthy rule.

A plutocrat is a member of the plutocracy. Isn’t it ironic that the OWS, complaining about Wall Street and the 1%, supports the president, a plutocrat, who wants to tax the rich to pay their fair share.

Some might have a complaint with Obama, even though Romney seems to be a part of the plutocracy as well.

“My mother was like the bees” by Jeanne Wagner

TED KOOSER, U.S. POET LAUREATE frequently delivers to my inbox a poem that I’ve never read that just captures perfectly some trait or habit. This poem by Jeanne Wagner, of Kensington, California is wonderful.

My mother was like the bees

because she needed a lavish taste
on her tongue,
a daily tipple of amber and gold
to waft her into the sky,
a soluble heat trickling down her throat.
Who could blame her
for starting out each morning
with a swig of something furious
in her belly, for days
when she dressed in flashy lamé
leggings like a starlet,
for wriggling and dancing a little madly,
her crazy reels and her rumbas,
for coming home wobbly
with a flicker of clover’s inflorescence
still clinging to her clothes,
enough to light the darkness
of a pitch-black hive.

Thoughts On “The Hunger Games”

We paid our money for “Hunger Games” last night. Bev and I gave the movie high marks. I’ve read all three books and Bev none of them, and she wasn’t lost, so don’t feel like you can’t see the movie without reading the books.

I was introduced to the “Hunger Games” by Quintin who rides the big yellow bus to Lincoln High and back. He was right when he said I wouldn’t be able to put the book down. It seems that most who ride my bus have read the book(s) and were anxious to see the movie.

I wonder if this is the book for the young as Ayn Rand’s “Atlas Shrugged” was for my generation. I wonder if the book is signaling and end to the government power over us. Are we finally going to stand up and say, “I’m mad as hell and I’m not going to take it anymore!” Will we finally say, “I will not comply!”

How large can the government grow, how much intrusion into our lives will we take before saying, “Enough!”

It is searing to see the government force parents to sacrifice a child between the age of 12 and 18 for the entertainment of the wealthy few. It is horror to see the government use force to contain chaos resulting from their policies.

These students know about Greece, and Syria. They live with a powerful government that can send them to war at a whim. They know the fear a letter from the IRS brings to their parents. I think they know that things are not getting easier. I think they fear that they will be saddled with college debt, searching for jobs that aren’t there.
