Forest Management?

I read at Max Redline that fire officials are worried that the two big eastern Washington fires may merge and be bigger than the area of Seattle. Something is wrong with our forest management. SOS Forests has two graphs that caught my eye: and

We have fewer fires, but they are big and getting bigger.

One more thing “…according to the National Center for Atmospheric Research (NCAR) and the University of California, large wildfires in the western United States can release as much carbon dioxide in a few weeks as all of the cars do in those same areas during an entire year.

Obama Will Meet With Morsi

Obama will meet with Egypt’s new president, Mohammed Morsi, but Obama won’t meet with Netanyahu!
UPDATE: Nobama now will NOT meet with Egypt’s new president, Mohammed Morsi or Netanyahu, but will meet with the ladies on The View!

“If He Cannot Lead His Own Party…”

Week 4 Football Upsets

#6 Oklahoma 19, #15 Kansas St 24

Seriously!
#24 Boise St. 7, BYU 6 and BYU had five turnovers. That’s not the look of a #24 team.

Well, that’s satisfying!
Oregon State beats #19 UCLA 27 to 20 and Mike Riley is tied for the most wins ever at OSU.

Now, let’s see if #3 Oregon can avoid the SI jinx tonight against #22 Arizona.

UPDATE: #3 Oregon overwhelms #22 Arizona 49 to 0!

Locally. Portland State loses to Southern Utah 49 to 42.

“Breaking Bad” May Win Emmys

Sunday is the Emmys hosted by Jimmy Kimmel and odds are short that “Breaking Bad” cops a number of the awards. It is nominated for at least six.

If you’ve been away from TV for awhile, “Breaking Bad” is set and produced in Albuquerque, New Mexico, and is the story of Walter White (Bryan Cranston), a struggling high school chemistry teacher who is diagnosed with advanced lung cancer at the beginning of the series. He turns to a life of crime, producing and selling methamphetamine with a former student, Jesse Pinkman (Aaron Paul), with the aim of securing his family’s financial future before he dies.

The show is intense and has moved from a scared Mr. White, paranoid about getting caught or killed to an unlikely power-hungry killer intent on manufacturing the best meth available. “Blue,” almost 99% pure, is heads above the competition. Part of the recent few shows has focused on the transportation of hazardous materials. Mr. White’s crew steals a key ingredient of meth from a tank car by stopping the train over a culvert.

The manufacturing site shifts around. Mr. White partners with a company that fumigates homes to rid them of pests. While the house is shrouded and before fumigation, Mr. White and his crew move in, brew up a batch of meth, and then depart. All their equipment, sized for their operation, is moved in containers like you see a touring band use. The hazmat shipping and hazmat suits are a small cost when these guys are making millions.

Seldom in “Breaking Bad” are we exposed to the terrible costs society pays for their meth habit, or the morality of cooking the stuff that kills. We root for Mr. White to triumph over his enemies and hope he gets away from his chief pursuer, his brother-in-law, even though we are appalled at his ruthlessness. Mr. White could be your next door neighbor.

Two Things Not Likely To Pass

1. Legislation or a resolution to criminalize contempt of Islam as a religion and its Prophet. (Would that we could just get toleration of Christianity and Judaism.)

2. Legislation proposed by Nobama for $1 billion debt relief plan to help Egypt stabilize its economy and grow its private sector.
