Book Review: “Wild: From Lost to Found on the Pacific Crest Trail”

Wild: From Lost to Found on the Pacific Crest Trail

By Cheryl Strayed

· 336 pages

· Publisher: Vintage; Reprint edition (March 26, 2013)

Cheryl Strayed hiked the Pacific Crest Trail (PCT) from the Mojave Desert to the Bridge of the Gods in Cascade Locks, Oregon. She hiked over 1,100 miles alone carrying a pack called Monster. While hiking she examined her life without her mother, who died at 50, her ex husband, her affairs, her use of drugs, and her place in the world.

The hike is excruciating.

“Miles weren’t things that blazed dully past. There were long, intimate straggles of weeds and clumps of dirt, blades of grass and flowers that bent in the wind, trees that lumbered and screeched. They were the sound of my breath and my feet hitting the trail one step at a time and the click of my ski pole. The PCT had taught me what a mile was. I was humble before each and every one.”

As I read her story, I was with her every step and didn’t want the story to end at Cascade Locks even though my feet were grateful. The hike was more a pilgrimage and I yearn for my own hike on the Camino de Santiago in Spain, a hike of over 500 miles. The book is filled with some good advice about what to carry. More than that, it’s a book about how to face your own fears, about never quitting and about forgiveness.

Five stars for Portland resident Cheryl Strayed’s “Wild.”

How To Move Velocity Of Money

It appears there might be a concerted effort on the part of the government officials and the MSM to frighten you about the safety of your money. Cyprus is the current example that violates our property rights and even the Constitution by stealing from depositors to bail out the banks. We say here that we should exercise care when we choose a bank, because some aren’t managed well. The fear now is no bank is safe and neither are our deposits.

So what to the PTB want you to do? They want you to pull out your savings and spend it on some asset. It doesn’t matter right now what you spend it on, but they want the money moving. They want the velocity or turnover of money to accelerate. That’s is inflationary! The more we see prices moving up the more we will want to spend on more assets before they move higher in price. Already we are seeing housing prices moving up and a dearth of homes for sale. We are seeing natural gas and crude oil increasing in price, along with gasoline.

We know prices have been rising faster than the Government propaganda. Soon we will see all manner of price increases. The FED needs all that money involved with QE, work at restoring growth in the economy and they believe they can withdraw the punch bowl at just the right time to cap inflation before it gets really out of hand. Good luck with that!

The only way to protect some of what you have is with Gold, Silver, Platinum and Palladium. The mania is coming!

Sequester Update: “Tune In, Tune Out!”

Day TWENTYEIGHT of the apocalyptic sequester and still here. Can’t believe it, can you? After all the dire warnings! Remember Ghostbusters, a 1984 film, about three unemployed parapsychology professors who start a business exterminating ghosts trying to explain to the Mayor of NY of the dangers:

Venkman: Or you can accept the fact that this city is headed for a disaster of biblical proportions.
Mayor: What do you mean, “biblical”?
Ray Stantz: What he means is Old Testament, Mr. Mayor, real wrath-of-God type stuff!
Venkman: Exactly.
Stanz: Fire and brimstone coming down from the sky! Rivers and seas boiling!
Spengler: Forty years of darkness! Earthquakes, volcanoes!
Winston Zeddmore: The dead rising from the grave!
Venkman: Human sacrifice! Dogs and cats, living together! Mass hysteria!
Mayor: Enough! I get the point! And what if you’re wrong?
Venkman: If we’re wrong, then nothing happens. We go to jail, peacefully, quietly. We’ll enjoy it. But if we’re right, and we can stop this thing… Lenny, you will have saved the lives of millions of registered voters.

Obama either has to up the ante or realize he over played his hand!

Why Wouldn’t We…?

When I first heard Obama say that 40% of all gun sales are done without a background check, “…then why wouldn’t we want to make sure there’s a background check on 40% of gun sales…”, I thought that’s a good question. What’s wrong with a background check? It’s like a waiting period to buy a gun!

Well, it seems that 40% of the gun sales are secondary gun sales. For example, you sell a used gun to another: a neighbor, a daughter, a son, etc. Actually, “…Universal background checks will ban secondary gun sales and eventually allow the government to know where every gun is sitting and where every gun owner lives. That is the end game.”

Bottom line, when Obama is running his mouth, you know there’s no good there for average guys and gals.

Book Review: “Dead Money” By Steve O’Brien

Dead Money

How much do you know about betting on racehorses? How did Russian mobsters and a smart young attorney and his horse-trainer girlfriend get involved in murder? You’ll find out soon enough in this recently released, thriller: “Dead Money.”

For the first time ever, defense attorney Dan Morgan owns a racehorse that could win big at Church Hill Downs. He could own a horse that runs in a televised race. That’s BIG, until, that is, an unknown group of thugs offers a $1 million for his horse Aly Dancer and won’t take no for an answer. Dan’s friend, math wiz, Lennie gives us a lesson in professional betting the odds.

In the meantime, Dan’s fighting for his hit and run client before a judge that insists on moving cases speedily along. The book is well written, with some sickening violence thrown in. You may read the book as fast as Aly Dancer can run.

On another level, this is the story of a man, a woman and a whole host of “backsiders” who love this horse. You’ll see that “There is something about the outside of a horse that is good for the inside of a man.”

I was given the book for free, but I am under no obligation to give the book a positive review.
