One of our favorite shows on TV is Showtime’s “Homeland” starring Clair Dames and Mandy Patinkin. Dames and Patinkin works for the CIA and were tracking two captured Americans, including Sgt. Brody, in Iraq who were sold to Abu Nazir and the Syrians. Sgt. Brody was turned when a drone attack killed Abu Nazir’s young son and 81 other children. Collateral damage!
The Washington Post today writes about our 14 drone attacks in Pakistan and elsewhere.
The administration has said that its covert, targeted killings with remote-controlled aircraft in Pakistan, Yemen, Somalia and potentially beyond are proper under both domestic and international law. It has said that the targets are chosen under strict criteria, with rigorous internal oversight.
It has parried reports of collateral damage and the alleged killing of innocents by saying that drones, with their surveillance capabilities and precision missiles, result in far fewer mistakes than less sophisticated weapons.
In one way I agree with Rep. Ron Paul that we just inflame the situation when we kill innocents. I know we are fighting a war against people who want to kill us, but we can’t win by creating more terrorists than we kill.
