What? Murmuration?

Yes, it means the synchronous movement of living beings to move in the same direction or change direction in a way that’s faster than one could communicate even when far apart.  In Portland we see the phenomenon at Chapman school each year as the Vaux’s swifts entertain with their swooping and turning and then disappear for the night down the tall chimney.

Recently James Dines has written of murmuration:

Dines headlines his just-published 2012 annual forecast issue “The Coming Worldwide Murmurations”.

He argues—as he has long done—that markets, and even social movements, are substantially driven by similar, little-understood principles of collective dynamics.

He thinks that these movements may be driven by fiat currencies and my be responsible for “Arab Springs,” possible revolution in China and even the U.S.!

A lot’s changed since the day I was a registered stockbroker in 1968. When I bought my first house using Benjamin Franklin S&L, the interest rate was 7% and I made sure that I had the ability to refinance if rates went back to their norms. Then inflation under Pres. Carter got out of hand and interest rates went through the roof. Now we are back to levels of the 1940’s.

Where to from here? My guess is our debt crisis will lead to higher interest rates after the world deals with Europe and Japan. Then just the interest cost here in the U.S. will eat us alive. We will either default on our debts or inflate them out of existence.

The one hope is that we elect politicians who brave the wrath of voters and get us to take our medicine, however I don’t see anyone with big enough cojones!

I am so glad my creaking joints, hair loss and age spots are a boon for some venture capitalists. I would hate to have my fading years just wasted.

GigaOM has an article that describes the technology that’s coming our way to help separate us from our $3 trillion in annual disposable income.

1. Technologies and services to foster “aging in place” will be huge - most older people want to stay in their homes. New technologies allow our children or care givers to monitor us in every room from remote locations.
2. When tech products hit big with older Americans, it’s often by mistake - think wii and iPads and devices that monitor our habits and notify druggists, for example, that we are getting low on prescriptions and need a refill
3. Target market: baby boomer care givers - technology to help baby boomers monitor their parents
4. Target market: baby boomer care givers - Home delivery and check-in services, and add-ons around them, could be very big.

Society already pays a disproportionate amount of health care money on the aged, and social security is a burden on the young. I’m so happy that we can give back part of our disposable income and provide research for even more products,

Folks, we’re not out of the woods yet… not by a long shot. The same problems plaguing Europe today are coming to US shores. And when they do, everyone will realize what I’ve been saying since 2009: that 2008 was the warm-up — the real crisis is when the US defaults and we face systemic collapse.

The MSM is looking for signs of a turn in the economy. They grasp on every statistic like todays’ release of initial claims for state unemployment benefits. They “…fell 10,000 to a seasonally adjusted 390,000 in the week ended Nov. 5, slightly below the 400,000 that analysts polled by Reuters had expected. The government revised its estimate for claims during the prior week to 400,000 from 397,000.”

The FED is through temporarily with QE. The economy is “addicted” to QE. Look for the economy to crash going into Q2, 2012.
