Pebble Bed Modular Reactors, Nearer!
I ‘ve posted several times about Pebble Bed Modular Reactors (PBMR), starting back in May, 2005, with updates on May 9th, 2005, May14th, 2005, Dec. 6th, 2005 and Dec. 16th, 2007.

How PBMR could look (Image: PBMR Pty.)
Thanks to Instapundit and Next Big Future, we find that “Canada’s SNC Lavalin has … been awarded a contract for engineering, procurement and construction services relating to Phase II of the PBMR project” in South Africa.
The small advanced reactor, a South African national project, would produce 165 MWe and could be built in ‘packs’ of eight. It is hoped that up to 30 of the units would be employed domestically in coming decades, taking industrial heat-supply roles in the production of hydrogen and synthetic oils as well as electricity. The PBMR design is also a contender for build in the USA in the Next Generation Nuclear Plant project.
The future for this technology looks extremely bright!
BTW, the business at SNC Lavalin has been very good! (See Chart)

Thanks. Good idea. I’ll become your regular reader and subscribe on RSS.
