Los Padres Hotspot
I asked Zeke Barlow, Staff Writer for Ventura County Star if this was the same hillside and slide that took place in 2005 in the Dick Smith Wilderness or is it a different location?
He said this location is different. The first was northwest of Ojai. This latest hot spot is northeast of Fillmore, California; still in the Los Padres National Forest.
The leading theory behind the latest hot spot is that gas or oil or some other hydrocarbon deep in the soil caught fire and is burning, pushing ground temperatures to 812 degrees. What ignited it or when it started burning is a whole other question.
