Georgia Drought, You Can’t Have It Both Ways
Competing water interests recall the water wars of the old west. The Army Corps of Engineers wants to send more water from Lake Lanier in Georgia south to Alabama and Florida.
The Corps manages the water usage between the states. It faced heavy criticism in June when it accidentally released 22 billion gallons of water from Lake Lanier, a major source of drinking water for the fast-growing Atlanta metropolitan area. The error came as the state was sinking into a drought.
Atlanta is concerned that only 90 days of water in the reservoir, threatens the city.
Florida has complained the state is not sending enough water downstream to protect endangered and threatened mussels on the banks of a drying river. And Alabama Gov. Bob Riley has urged the Corps to release more water from Georgia’s lakes to help his state cope with the dry conditions.
Isn’t it interesting that (sharp intake of breath) global warming is supposed to bring about more hurricanes, like Katrina, yet in the Southeast “Scorching summer temperatures and a drier-than-normal hurricane season fueled the drought.”
State climatologist David Stooksbury said it will take months of above average rainfall to replenish the system. He is now predicting the drought could worsen if “La Nina” conditions develop and bring little winter rainfall.

Update:

i can see how you might be confused; ignorance does tend to confusion.
it’s not really just “global warming”, but it’s “climate change.” As the globe warms (which the bush administration does not dispute) the climate will change (which the bush administration also does not dispute).
these changes will be manifest in all kinds of ways. for more, read this article about climate change and drought.
so, it is interesting this is due to climate change. either that, or god is punishing the people of georgia for supporting the war.

Hey, John, don’t get smart about my ignorance, legitimate or not. Those words about global warming come from your leader, the great hoaxster, Al Gore. He blames Katrina on (sharp intake of breath) global warming.
He wants us to believe that more global warming equals more hurricanes, yet Georgia is in a drought, because they say there is a lack of hurricanes. Ergo, you can’t have it both ways!!!

actually, mike, considering what’s at stake, it’s important to be smart about climate change.
2 corrections to your post above.
1. “He blames Katrina on (sharp intake of breath) global warming.”
of course. and if you’ve seen his film, he talks about how depending on the geographical location, droughts are another product of climate change.
al gore predicts georgia’s problem, also.
don’t tell me you’ve been cocking off about him, but you haven’t seen the film!
2. “Ergo, you can’t have it both ways!!!”
actually you can. if you’d read the science, (you have, haven’t you?) draught and hurricanes are both intensified under predictive climate change model. it’s a weather ~system~ a hurricane one place may cause a drought somewhere else. duh.
Look, asshole, don’t come on my blog with that attitude or assumptions. It was the state climatologist in the article who said “Scorching summer temperatures and a drier-than-normal hurricane season fueled the drought. State climatologist David Stooksbury. Again global waring = more hurricanes according to Al Gore. But the state climatologist cites few hurricanes.
Now I have seen Al Gore’s movie at my daughter’s request and have cited the 11 inaccuracies in the movie.
And for your attitrude and assumptions you are banned from commenting on my site. I don’t have to put up with rudeness. I am all for reasonable discussion, but you can show a little respect when you visit my site.
Hi Mike - Many climate scientists predict that global warming will result in fewer, larger storms. That’s what we are seeing — the worst of both worlds. Similarly in California, overall the weather is getting wetter, because of more ocean evaporation, so the brush is growing larger and denser, but then the hot temperatures dry it out and we get those big fires.
New research from the Center for Global Development, where I work, predicts big declines in agricultural production in developing countries, and in the southern portions of the U.S. The states with the worst impacts are mostly GOP Red states. Climate change deniers will get it first and worst.
Look, Georgia, Florida and Louisiana are all of a piece. Al Gore said we would see more hurricames like Katrina. We haven’t this year, have we? The Georgia climatologisst blamed the lack of hurricanes for the drought. If we have all the global warming, where are the storms this year. The scientists who predicted the number of hurricanes before the season started, predicted a large number of because of global warming, then they kept downgrading the number and severity.
Regarding California, there are wet cycles in CA and then dry cycles. Two years ago there was a wet cycle. The land became fuel loaded and then the Santa Ana comes like it does almost every year. The wet cycle is followed by a dry cycle and fires. This time they may be more severe because they were set.
Finally, have you ever heard of the dust bowl. It happened in the 30s. I believe the hottest year on record was 1934. With all the global warming crap and the rise in the CO2, yada, yada, yada, we still haven’t equaled or exceeded the year of 1934 as far a temperature. It happens in cycles. It is not so cut and dried to be called Global warming. Call it climate change!
And don’t you dare try to blame humans for the climate change. Do you know that the last major fire in Oregon put out more CO2, than all the cars in Oregon in a year?
If you want to blame man, blame the Dept. of |Foresty for practicing fire suppression. Instead of a lot of little fires that were cleansing, we get these massive fires and atttribute the fires to Global Warmiong. Give me a f–king break!
Anti-environmentalists like “Mover Mike” simply lack basic intelligence. Global Warming, also now called climate change because of the complex and almost entirely negative impacts of global warming, causes an increase in both floods and droughts. Only anti-environmental morons lacking IQ try to make this into a contradiction.
At times, there will be more intense floods in some areas. At times, there will be more intense droughts in some areas. What anti-environmentalists are doing is spreading confusion that is continuing business as usual of increased greenhouse gas emissions. Hundreds of millions of people are expected to die this century because of climate change. How many people will Mover Mike murder through his lies? We will leave that to future generations to decide.
Chad, I try to be open to arguments from all sides and make up my mind. I don’t like people to come to my site and insult my intelligence and call me anti-environment. Your inflamatory rant is the most bothersome thing and tiresome. You assume you have all the answers and are closed to hearing anything on the other side. Don’t assume people who disagree with you are morons.
