“Take Shelter” Movie Shocks!

Are you crazy if you see bad things coming down the road (in America) or are you really seeing “something evil this way comes.” “Take Shelter” by Jeff Nichols is on one level a look at Curtis, played exceptionally well by Michael Shannon, a man slowly going crazy like his mom before him. Your heart might break at the hurricane he brings into his loving family’s life.
But, on another level, what if the doctor is wrong and Curtis is really seeing the future? We know that the majority of Americans feel the country is on the wrong path. Incomes for the 99% are stagnant, unemployment is near depression highs, debt is almost unmanageable, countries are on the verge of bankruptcy. I’m tempted to say, “Dogs and Cats sleeping together!” The New Yorker writes that Nichols “…has caught the way the dangers of the world intersect with insanity…”
My wife and I liked the movie. The audience, not so much. We heard a few boos at the end. Maybe, it’s easy to be in denial about the consequences of our actions here in the U.S. Maybe, it’s a liberal crowd of people who would vote for Obama again. Whatever, it is hard to be the nail that sticks up. We don’t respect or even listen to the views that go against the MSM’s doctrine. For me, though, it feels like we are running out of time!
