“The Stoning of Soraya M” And The Burka

Last night Beverly and I watched the movie “The Stoning of Soraya M.” The story is based on the book of the same name and an actual murder by stoning in 1986 in Iran. Yes, death by stoning continues to this day. Amnesty International says “there are at least 11 individuals at risk of execution by stoning in Iran.”
Maybe, I get angry at the way women are treated in lands operating under Sharia or maybe I’m just an angry guy. However, I just don’t see the attraction of Islam for anyone except men who are used to having power. I’m certain western women would not put up with being treated as second class. And yet, we have women of the Muslim faith who emigrate to the west and continue wearing the clothes that are a symbol of their loss of human rights.
The movie tells the story of Soraya M, married to Ghorban-Ali and mother of two boys and two girls. The husband beats her and wants a divorce to marry a 14-year old, but he is unwilling to support two families. Soraya will not give him a divorce for she has no way to support herself.
With the help of the local Mullah, Ghorban-Ali concocts a scheme to have authorities find her guilty of adultery, a finding that sentences her to death by stoning. After her death, Ghorban-Ali would be free to remarry. It is nuts that a woman is considered guilty when accused and must prove her innocence. A man is considered innocent unless proven guilty. Soraya is convicted because her hands touched a widower and she smiled at him.
The movie shows the men in agreement, even Soraya’s father considers her a whore. The women who should unite against the men and this abomination of stoning are riddled with those who would believe the worst of Soraya. I think women are their own worst enemies. There is even one devout bureaucrat who doesn’t want Soraya murdered and prays for God’s will. He prays for a sign that will allow him to cancel the execution.
You want to know what we are up against? We are fighting the dark ages, the superstitious and instead of saying enough!, we have many women among us who want to find some way to compromise, to find some moderate way. Just today Candy Spelling writing at The Huffington Post is not a fan of the French decree of banning the burka. She says it only affects 2,000 women. Banning the Burka is, in Spelling’s words “…an all-out assault on religious freedom and women. It relates to the burkas and niqab worn by some of the most-religious women to conceal either all but their eyes or their identity completely.” No she didn’t gnash her teeth and rant about the loss of human rights. She’s ok with the subjugation of women apparently as long as they have the freedom to show that they are Muslim.
Spare me!
