Stuff!
Well, how about that! The three couples, we call ourselves Sei Amici, that golf together and vacation together and share birthdays together for the last 17 years is splitting up. Not splitting up as in divorcing, “I don’t ever want to see you again!” splitting up, but one of the couples left Monday morning at 5:00am for Scottsdale, Arizona where winter days are sunny and one can be warm and play golf year round. They are going to buy a house with a pool for half the price of the one they sold here.
They had a furniture sale and sold off their stuff. They sold the dining room table and chairs with the special fabric that matched the curtains and picked up the color of the walls. They sold their sofas and their BarBQue and exercise equipment. They got rid of the thousands of golf balls found in the water hazards and the mirror used to practice their swiings. They got rid of their stuff.
The second couple is contemplating a move to the Pacific Coast of Mexico and we are contemplating becoming snowbirds. We would love to spend half the year with our toes in the sand and half the year in Portland when the rain stops.
I read recently about a boomer who had an estate sale. What didn’t sell he donated to charity, packed his bags and moved to Mexico. No backward glances, no remorse over the loss of his stuff. Just joy over his new life. Most of the time we put to much emphasis on stuff and I’m shocked at how easily we can jettison all our stuff. George Carlin said it best in his famous routine about stuff:
