Somehow, to me, it reminds me of the stories in AA about drinking (or addiction), (that it) is a progressive disease. As long as you use, you are on a down escalator. Maybe he met someone he knew that was getting better, while he was going downhill (wasn’t there). He recognized his old friend and said I thought you died a long long time ago. After they parted he searched for many years for a way to control his addiction.
