Drought Continues In Georgia
Lake Lanier
When I last visited the Georgia drought, it was in October of 2007 and State climatologist David Stooksbury was “predicting the drought could worsen if “La Nina” conditions develop and bring little winter rainfall.”
The AJC reports today
The drought is reintensifying, with a hot and dry early July on the way, said Andy Ashley of the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers.Lake Lanier, already at 14 feet below full (is) setting daily record low levels…
Besides the lack of rain, a big problem is evaporation. Lake Lanier, the reservoir created by Buford Dam, is the main water source and loses 193.9 million gallons of water a day. By comparison, Gwinnett County - one of America’s fastest-growing counties for the past 20 years “withdrew an average of 74.2 million gallons a day from the lake in May.”
Some have predicted a large out-migration due to the drought. Stay tuned!
