Billy Collins In Paperback
One of my favorite poets, Billy Collins, former poet laureate of the U.S., now has “Sailing Alone Around the Room: New and Selected Poems” out in paperback. I don’t travel anywhere without a “Billy Collins” with me. He inspires me to see with different eyes.
Read the first stanza of his new poem Winter Syntax:
A sentence starts out like a lone traveler
heading into a blizzard at midnight,
tilting into the wind, one arm shielding his face,
the tails of his thin coat flapping behind him.
Or how about this Advice to Writers:
Even if it keeps you up all night,
wash down the walls and scrub the floor
of your study before composing a syllable.
