Book Review: The Race. Again!

Back in July of 2007, I reviewed the book The Race by Richard North Patterson. It’s about Corey Grace,

a contemporary Republican, a cross between John McCain who was shot down and tortured and Bill Cohen, Republican Sec. of Defense under Clinton, married to the beautiful and black Janet Langhart. Grace is an honest man running for president caught between the party man, Rob Marotta, with few core beliefs, and the Evangelical man, Bob Christy, minister advocating a Christian world-view dominated by his opposition to rights for homosexuals.

I happened to read the book again and was struck by how much the world had changed in a year. A year ago, many of us hadn’t heard much about Obama and assumed Hillary Clinton would be the nominee. It looked like the Republicans would have a deadlocked convention, like the one pictured in the book. Race was an issue in the book and it is still an issue, only it seems the only one bringing it up is the man of color. Big media is still an issue, but the bias is on the liberal side.

One big difference in a year is the discussion about gay rights. One solution in the book was to let each state decide their policy toward gays and marriage and forego a constitutional amendment. But then after the people of California voted for a ban on gay marriage, their state supreme court overturned the people’s will, maybe we are back to the amendment. Or, maybe we concentrate on areas of more importance!

A year ago, I said I would never vote for John McCain. Boy have I changed my mind! There is no way I can vote for Obama, Symbolism Over Substance, socialist, naif, and generally, a pretty shallow fellow.

We need an experienced hand on the tiller, who can tell the Russians to go to hell. One who knows that we need to Drill, Drill and Drill! A man who is a maverick. A man who can pick the best ideas from both sides.
