Saltzman & Giusto: Rules What Rules!
City commissioner Dan Saltzman asked his colleagues to delay their vote, for up to six weeks, on taking $19 million from downtown and Pearl urban renewal districts (URDs) to build a school in the David Douglas school district. The school district has no geographic ties to the URDs and faces massive law suits if approved.
Saltzman rolls out the “greater good” theory, just like they do in eminent domain cases:
The Oregonian quotes him saying
“It’s troubling to allow the future of families and schoolchildren of David Douglas to be left to lawyers, legislators and lobbyists,” Saltzman wrote in a letter to fellow commissioners.
Another Oregonian that doesn’t like the rules is Multnomah County Sherriff Bernie Giusto.
…Sheriff Bernie Giusto declared Friday that he was above the rules as he unsuccessfully fought a charge that he violated state ethics laws by using his county-issued sport utility vehicle for a personal trip to Seattle.“The policy is either in effect because I say it is or not in effect because I say it’s not, because I am the sheriff,” Giusto said.
Socialists and mini-dictators are Portland’s lot!
