Who is Molly Ivins?

From columnist Molly Ivins:
I think we have alienated our allies and have killed more Iraqis than Saddam Hussein ever did.
Oh, really! And how many did Hussein kill? I’ve read numbers like 300,000 killed by Hussein. You’re telling me the USA has killed more than that? Are these combatants, civilians or both>? You Molly Ivins have made an outlandish statrment and you had better be prepared to back it up, because all kinds of hell are about to descend on your head.

Mike,
Molly Ivins is an angry old liberal.
As for how many people have been killed by Saddam Hussein, that figure is not known at this time… Estimates vary. The tricky thing is that “Genocide” is defined a certain way by the Genocide Convention, which interventionists cite in order to compel U.S. military intervention in places such as Rwanda, Sudan, Kosovo, Bosnia, and possibly Iraq - though with Iraq, the timing of the mass killings [the ones that correspond to the mass graves] was - mostly - 12 and 15 years prior to the start of “Operation Iraqi Freedom,” which would make justifying the current operation under that law difficult. But that is another issue.
It will be important to see what the charges are against Saddam Hussein and the tyrants of his despotic former regime. One problem that may arise for the prosecution is that most of the mass killings occurred during (or immeditely after) wartime, and the law recognizes possible legal “defenses” for killings under certain circumstances. Depending on how the tribunal trying him operates, the number of deaths that the tyrannical Baathist regime could be charged for may vary.
That being said, Ivins’ statement is absurd, and offensive. It is unfortunate that we have major columnists like this. That article link does not seem to be working now… I will try to find the article somewhere else.
