Left Turn Kills Woman
The driver of a C-Tran bus that struck and killed a pedestrian in downtown Vancouver Friday afternoon has been placed on administrative leave, the agency announced today.
The unidentified woman was walking westbound in the crosswalk between West 8th and Washington streets when the No. 4 bus hit her about 11:30 a.m., said Kim Kapp, a spokeswoman for the Vancouver Police Department. The bus was turning southbound onto Washington Street from 8th.
Emergency crews found the woman pinned underneath the bus. She was dead when they arrived, Kapp said.
My guess is the driver was making a left hand turn and the female pedestrian was walking in the same direction as the bus. She was probably lost in the blindspot created by the mirrors. The only way to see the pedestrian is to “rock and roll” in the driver’s seat to see around the mirrors.
